How does the Schengen 90/180 rule work?

Travelers who aren't EU, EEA or Swiss citizens can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries together. On every day of a stay, look back 180 days: the days spent in Schengen, arrival and departure days included, must be 90 or fewer. The window rolls, so days fall off as time passes. Since April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System records every crossing, so overstays are detected automatically.

How do I log my trips?

On Today, tap Log Arrival when you arrive in a country: your previous stay ends that day. To add past trips, go to Trips and tap +. Add the last 180 days at least, so the Schengen count is right. With Pro, turn on Settings → Detect countries automatically and the app logs each country for you.

Does automatic detection drain my battery or need internet?

No. It uses iOS's low-power location changes (about every 500 meters of travel, not GPS tracking) and finds the country with maps built into the app, offline. To detect crossings while the app is closed, choose Always when iOS asks, or in the Settings app → Stay Counter → Location. Check the list in Trips now and then: near borders, a crossing can be logged a little late.

Can I check a trip before booking it?

Yes. In Plan, add the dates: the app checks the trip with your past stays and the trips planned before it, and tells you the day it would break a rule. On a rule's screen, If You Enter On shows how many days you could stay from any date.

Which other rules can it track?

With Pro: the UK (up to 6 months per visit), the US visa waiver/ESTA (90 days per visit; Canada, Mexico and nearby islands don't restart it), your own rules (for example Thailand, 60 days per visit, or Turkey, 90 in 180), the days of a Schengen visa, and days per country for the 183-day tax residency threshold, including the US substantial presence test.

Is the count official?

No. Stay Counter is a planning aid. Rules depend on your passport and can change, and border officers decide on entry. Double-check with the official EU short-stay calculator and keep your boarding passes and stamps.

Can I use it without opening the app?

Yes. Add the Days Left widget to your Home Screen or Lock Screen. With Siri, say “How many days do I have left in Stay Counter” or “Log arrival in Stay Counter”.

Where is my data stored? How do I move to a new device?

Everything stays on your device. With Pro, use Settings → Export Backup and save the file to iCloud Drive or Files. On the new device, choose Restore from Backup.

How do I restore or cancel my purchase?

To restore, tap Restore Purchases in Settings. To cancel a subscription, open the Settings app → your name → Subscriptions.
